Building Social Skills through Story Time – Sharing

Time: 1:30-2:30 p.m.
Specifically for: Kindergarteners (5-6 years), School Ages (6 years and up); Grown-ups
Many children will be challenged by sharing. This special story time will focus on skills that are related to the topic of sharing with others. April Thompson, Licensed Child & Family Therapist, will be reading the book Martha Doesn’t Share By Samantha Berger. Children will then have the opportunity to discuss the book through “process questions” to assist them in gaining from and relating to the values learned from the book. But don’t expect really good sharing skills before age three.
Play Partner: April Thompson, Licensed Child & Family Therapist
Grown-up Tip: Sharing is a huge lesson to learn. Start early by asking your child to share with you. It may get easier when playmates come over for a play date. Make it easy by having other toys to play with as options. But don’t expect really good sharing skills before the age of three.
RSVP: Register below

Minimum: 3 Children, Maximum: 12 Children

Fee: Included with museum admission

Time: 4:00-4:45 p.m.
Specifically for: Kindergarteners (5-6 years), School Ages (6 years and up); Grown-ups
By the end of 4 years of age children begin to view themselves as a whole person involving body, mind, and feelings. Let’s use this opportunity to focus on those new found feelings that your child experiences. This story time will focus on social skills related to feelings. April Thompson, Licensed Child & Family Therapist, will read The Way I Feel By Janan Cain. Your children will get so much from this story time as they listen to a new reader and answer the “process questions” that follow-up the story. As a bonus your child will make their very own feelings mask to continue the learning and play at home.
Play Partner: April Thompson, Licensed Child & Family Therapist
Grown-up Tip: Play a “Name that Face” game. Use a mirror to express your feelings then ask your child to “name that face.” Have fun with this game, silly faces are always welcome!

Young Rembrandts Parent & Pal Art Workshop

Time: 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Specifically for: School Ages (6 years and up); Grown-Ups (18+ years of age)
What better way to appreciate the planet than to create your own beautiful image of nature? And what could be better than sharing that experience with your child? Join us this afternoon as we present a dual Parent & Me Art Workshop. Drawing by Design instructors offer an enriching, fun experience as they teach parents the skills needed to complete a professional-level work of art such as a hummingbird surrounded by colorful flowers. Simultaneously, the children will be nearby having their own two-hour lesson as they complete a pastel version of Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” in an engaging, fun filled class of their own. Combine an afternoon of learning and fun with your child and by the end of the class, you will want to frame your masterpieces side by side!
Play Partner: Young Rembrandts
Grown-up Tip: When children are fully engaged, they pay attention to detail and put their full effort into what they are doing. When attention wonders, parents can often ask provoking questions to help children re-engage.
RSVP: Register through Young Rembrandts or Pretend City

Class Maximum 15 Children; 24 grown-ups
Class Minimum 8 Children, 8 grown-ups
